SUI: Experimental animal numbers decline
The number of animals used for experimental purposes in Switzerland in 2012 was 8.4% lower than in 2011, totaling about 606,000 animals. Of these, 378,000 were mice, 102,000 rats, 69,000 birds, and 24,000 fish. 277 primates were used for fundamental research and in the category discovery, development, and quality control. 55% of animals were used in fundamental research. The severity of animal experiments is classified into 4 categories, from 0 to 3. In 2012, 78% of the animal experiments were categorized as severity level 0 or 1; 20.1% as severity level 2, and 1.9% as severity level 3.
