EU: Thomas Hartung leaves ECVAM

Dear colleagues and friends,
I have received today the notification, that I will change responsibility in the interest of the service on 1st of May; I will be in charge of the unit of vulnerability and traceability at the Institute for Protection and Security of the Citizen, at the JRC in Ispra. I am looking forward to taking this new challenge.
At the same time, I am looking back with satisfaction and pride on the five and a half years in ECVAM and the achievements with my wonderful team and the amazing net of collaborators:
We have responded to the demands of the 7th amendment to the cosmetics directive, REACH and the animal welfare action plan. We have taken advantage of this push and set up an enormous effort: There are prospects now to meet the requirements of the cosmetics ingredients testing deadline of 2009 by 2010-2011. The running validation activities have the potential to cut animal numbers and costs for REACH by half as confirmed by external peer-review. A major contribution was also the coordination from side of the Commission of REACH implementation project 3.3; the test strategies developed here have revolutionised the way safety assessments for chemicals will be done in Europe in the future. By promoting the concept of an evidence-based toxicology and the conference we organised last year, we have helped to move toxicology toward a self-appraisal and renewal.
We have raised the number of validity statements from 16 to 34 (with up to 40 more expected by the end of 2009 from the running projects). A total of 170 methods are currently under evaluation with 37 ring trials running. The process was refined and accelerated as well as increasingly internationally harmonized. The close collaboration with many industrial partners, animal welfare groups, academic institutions and regulatory bodies has made an approach possible, which deserves the motto "Europe goes alternative" as used by EPAA, we helped to create, for the annual conferences.
ECVAM has been involved in 17 DG RTD sponsored projects with more than 300 partner organisations and 110 million Euro of funding. Our participation increased the efficacy of the development of alternatives dramatically: while in the past one method per 20 million Euro of funding arrived in the validation pipeline, it is now roughly one per million spent.
ECVAM also served as a place for education and research: 12 Ph.D. were completed (6 more running) and almost 300 papers with ECVAM authors were published since 2002 (with more than 800 Impact Factor points). At the same time, almost 800 articles were written on our work by journalists. Five awards were received, last the 2006 US Society of Toxicology Enhancement of Animal Welfare Award, and I became honorary full professor of the University of Konstanz, Germany.
I will leave it with this short account. I am convinced that the dedicated and skilled team of ECVAM will continue successfully on this road. I am available where requested, but will spend my full energy now on the new challenges ahead.

Zum anderen wird dadurch ein Überblick über Arbeitsgruppen gegeben, die in diesem Bereich tätig sind, um damit zur Vernetzung der Wissenschaftler(innen) beizutragen. Weitere Arbeitsgruppen, die mit in die Liste aufgenommen werden möchten, können sich gerne mit uns in Verbindung setzen.
Darüber hinaus bietet die Website eine Fülle von Informationen: Die Kategorie „Aktuelles“ stellt Neuigkeiten aus Forschung und Politik in verständlicher Weise dar, ein Newsletter ist in Vorbereitung. Eine Literaturübersicht vertieft spezielle Themengebiete. Außerdem stellen wir eine Link-Liste zur Verfügung sowie eine Übersicht über Stiftungen und Organisationen, die tierversuchsfreie Forschung fördern.
