Applying the three Rs in acute ecotoxicity

For hazard identification/classification in Environmental Risk Assessment, the first step is to determine the acute ecotoxicity and, on basis of this, to establish a No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC). Acute ecotoxicity is based on LC50 tests with single species. For
a rough estimation of toxicity for classification and labelling purposes killing a large number of vertebrates is not justified. This paper analyses the present situation and solutions proposed to avoid or to reduce vertebrate tests either with more rational testing strategies and/or by developing animal alternatives that can provide data on this first step in the estimation of toxicity.
